Bear Camp Freedom Riders Mission

Bear Camp Freedom Riders, a mountain bike camp for refugee children, exposes youth ages 10-18 to the active and healthy lifestyle of mountain biking in the Boise foothills while fostering self confidence, independence, and team building skills, as well as educating about trail etiquette and encouraging environmental stewardship.

About Bear Camp Freedom Riders

Bear Camp completed its second annual camp in August, 2009 and represented 32 youth (eight more than the previous year) from six different countries. Seven veteran participants returned this year for a second year at Bear Camp with completely different attitudes and skill levels. These youth looked their instructors in the eye with new confidence and shared their excitement for life and the camp. For many refugee youth, Bear Camp offers the first step at feeling accepted in a community and the encouragement of knowing what they can accomplish.

Strategic Partnerships

Bear Camp is affiliated with the IRC (International Rescue Committee). The IRC provides opportunities for refugees to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of refugees are invited by the U.S. government to seek safety and freedom. Forced to flee conflict or persecution, many have survived for years against incredible odds. They step off the plane with next to nothing but their dignity, hope and determination. Here in Boise, we help them rebuild their lives. I work closely with the youth coordinator and executive director throughout the year on building and sustaining the camp. This year Sustainable Community Connections of Idaho became our fiscal sponsor. SCC Idaho is a local resource and network that encourages ecologically sound, economically viable and socially just endeavors.
